What is a Multi-Entreprenuer?
A new career trend is emerging, blowing up the traditional 9-5 existence. There are many terms for it: multi-passionates, entrepreneurs, serial entrepreneurs… Instead of clocking into the same job every day for years, people are choosing freedom through a diverse portfolio of careers.
I made the leap a year ago after learning my role was being eliminated, and I had a few months to figure out what was next. It came at a particularly desperate moment when I asked the universe for more connection, so I took the sign and ran with it. Now, I happily embrace my work being different every day and earn a living from four roles. That sounds terrifying for some people, but I can’t imagine ever going back.
Multi-Entrepreneurs are passionate and brave, seeking out new experiences and honoring their varied interests. This version of my life looks like having the freedom to get outside with my friends on a nice day or pack up work and finish it from a campsite. Work-life balance is easy because I like what I do. Work feels like a part of my life, not something I must do to have one.
TL;DR
Tired of the traditional career path? Multi-entrepreneurship offers freedom, balance, and diverse income streams. Perfect for creatives, ADHDers, and those seeking a life beyond the 9-5. Dive into tips on making the transition and embracing this flexible career model.

Are you intrigued? This path can be great for ADHDers like myself who struggle with the label of job hopper because things get boring fast. This career flexibility offers freedom that works great for parents and caretakers. Artists have had day jobs since the beginning of time. Could the title “Multi-Entrepreneur” replace starving artist?
Combining passion with income streams is a surefire way to love what you do so you never have to work a day in your life. When your income isn’t tied to a single source, you can take on roles for fun, knowing you aren’t forced to do them 40+ hours a week or live off a smaller wage to do so. Monetizing your hobbies isn’t quite so daunting when you realize you don’t have to chase profits over joy.
The variety of tasks I do in any given week keeps me engaged and provides the flexibility to chase my whims and honor my energy levels. I felt trapped by the expectation of being in the same place daily with no end in sight. Can you relate?
How to Become a Multi-Entrepreneur:
Making this transition is often sparked by a drastic need for change. Sometimes, it’s like it was for me with a job loss or other life events that drive change. Other times, it comes from something internal… “I might snap if I have to deal with this again!”
People find themselves in need of diversified income and decide to mix it up. Start slow and integrate a side hustle, or look for remote work opportunities that will give you back more of your time and freedom. Being your own boss can be a difficult transition requiring tremendous discipline, so getting your feet wet with a smaller project is wise.
Once you’re running one work-from-home business or simply transitioning to a less demanding remote role, it’s time to expand. What things do you love doing but feel like you can’t make a living at? What could you do seasonally or only a couple times a month that would bring joy to your career?
For me, it looks like:
1. Running this lovely Project Management business
2. A part-time finance job to scratch the type A part of my brain
3. Engaging my creativity and caretaking skills as a nanny
4. Tutoring to fulfill my urge to help others succeed
5. Nurturing my family as the primary “homemaker”
I can make enough to pay my bills, work way less than I had to when I was trying to climb the corporate ladder, and still have time for hobbies and ideation. You can, too!
Why is everyone talking about multiple income streams?
Economic uncertainty has plagued our society for years, never seeming to fully recover from the 2008 recession. As a result, many prioritize having multiple jobs or side hustles to cushion themselves and avoid putting all their eggs in one basket. Over time, that has evolved into a trend of going away with one salaried position altogether and embracing something new.
With so many people struggling to make ends meet, the old ways of keeping money talk private have gone by the wayside, and it’s a beautiful thing. Inflation and general cost-of-living increases made many of us say enough is enough. The truth is, it’s never been easier to diversify your earnings!
Technology has advanced, and thanks to the COVID pandemic, even the least likely employers have started offering remote opportunities. The gig economy has exploded, making it easy to design a work-life balance on your own terms. It’s also easier than ever to start a business, something that can be done seamlessly alongside other responsibilities.
Younger generations don’t play around with work-life balance. It’s widely understood that the 40-hour workweek benefits employers more than employees. When those 40 hours could no longer provide a comfortable living, it changed how the working class viewed employers. Traditional employment doesn’t cut it for people who want to plan work around their lives, not vice versa.
The Future
The multi-entrepreneurship trend will only grow as younger generations enter the workforce with new priorities. The high cost of education is already deterring many students from college, so the pipeline to traditional employment is getting broken sooner and sooner. The cost of living is unlikely to decrease, so people will still be dependent on multiple incomes regardless.
My advice to anyone starting this lifestyle is to embrace the ebbs and flows without anxiety. Budgeting is essential; save when you’re doing well to cover the lower-earnings months. And live your freakin life. Do the things that excite you and the things that terrify you. Prioritize living because we only get to do this once!
